A Note From Janny

The recent 2024–2025 research review on the use of Reiki provides profound validation for the integrative therapies we advocate. This research is vital because it provides a measurable, evidence-based link between energy healing and physiological recovery, moving Reiki from a complementary curiosity to a clinically significant intervention.

The data is particularly compelling for bedside practice, showing that even a brief 10-minute  session can yield a 72.6% reduction in stress and a 63.3% reduction in pain. For healthcare providers, this represents a powerful, non-invasive tool to address the immediate suffering of our patients without the side effects often associated with pharmacological-only approaches. Furthermore, seeing Reiki’s impact on cancer-related fatigue and nausea reinforces its role as an essential component of a comprehensive treatment plan. With over 140 peer-reviewed papers now available, we can confidently state that by supporting the parasympathetic nervous system, we are not just 'relaxing' the patient—we are actively enhancing their innate healing potential and overall quality of life."

With all of this said, society has taught us that research evidence is the final word. Uninformed people often claim there is no scientific evidence that Reiki is a viable complementary therapy.  However, I know from my own experience that it is our innate wisdom that causes us to know in our hearts that Reiki energy may help us. ny more readily connecting with the healing connection.  Combined with the research, our mind, body, and Spirit says I feel better, more connected to life.  Yes, Reiki wsorks.

I have summarized the research findings:

 Key 2024–2025 Research Findings  Summary

  • Large-Scale Community Study (2025): The largest study to date, involving 1,724 participants, found that a single 10-minute Reiki session resulted in a 72.6% reduction in stress and a 63.3% reduction in pain.
  • Cancer Support (2024-2025):
    • A study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (2024) evaluated 392 sessions for cancer outpatients, showing clinically significant improvements in pain, fatigue, nausea, and anxiety.
  •      A  2025 randomized trial found Reiki more effective than both "Sham Reiki" and progressive relaxation for reducing pain and stress in cancer patients.
  • Surgical Recovery: Research in 2024 showed that Reiki significantly improved sleep quality and reduced pain for patients undergoing hormone therapy for breast and prostate cancer. Another 2025 study highlighted its efficacy in reducing post-operative pain in knee osteoarthritis patients.
  • Quality of Life Meta-Analysis (2025): A systematic review of 11 randomized controlled trials (661 participants) concluded that Reiki therapy significantly enhances overall quality of life, with the best results seen in sessions lasting ≥is greater than or equal to≥ 60 minutes or acute sessions ≤is less than or equal to≤ 20 minutes.
  • Distance Reiki (2023-2025): Studies on remote Reiki for healthcare workers during the pandemic reported significant decreases in stress and anxiety, and improvements in sleep quality.
  • Current Scientific Status The Center for Reiki Research reports that as of July 2024, there are over 140 peer-reviewed papers on Reiki. While many are small pilot studies, the growing body of evidence suggests Reiki is better than a placebo for activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers heart rate and blood pressure.

Evidence Based scientific research exists

Ann Baldwin, Ph.D. Clinical Professor of Physiology of the University of Arizona writes in her book, Reiki in Clinical Practice; a science-based guide, that clinical studies exist and the research supports the use of Reiki sessions to reduce pain, anxiety, and stress. This 7-minute video explains how Reiki works.
